This committee was established in January 1998 in response to parent concerns related to the health and safety of their children. The chair is a position that requires nomination by the PTACHC Executive Board and vote. The chair of HEIC has a voting position on the PTACHC Executive Board and is required to attend all PTACHC meetings.
The HEIC committee chair or a HEIC Workgroup leader attends various meetings including,
but not limited to
1.Research and
disseminate information to the membership and the community on
health, safety, and environmental issues impacting children and
youth;
2. Work with established county, state and national PTA committees
on related issues as needed.
3. Advocate for and increase awareness of laws, policies, procedures
and practices that support safe and healthy school environments as
defined by PTA policy, resolutions and/or motions
4.Support, advocate and assist in HCPSS programs and curriculum as
they relate to this committee's standing rules such as
a) School Environment
Team (SET) Project
b)safe and healthy environments;
c)public awareness
5. Advise and provide
support to PTA Legislative Committees on health and environmental
issues;
6. Participate, provide support or act as a liaison to local councils,
organizations or committees whose goals are consistent with National
PTA, State PTA and PTACHC such as the Howard County School Health Council
7.Advocate for adequate HCPSS budget allocations in areas that relate
to this committee's objectives.
