1. Project Safe and After Prom Mission statement
To assist middle and high school PTAs provide parents with and resources on preventing underage drinking and other unhealthy teen behaviors.
To advocate for and to assist the efforts of high school PTAs in
coordinating alcohol-free and drug-free After Prom events.
Project Safe and After Prom collaborates with key government agencies and organizations to inform our community about safe and healthy teen behaviors as well as the legal consequences of underage drinking and substance abuse, and the dangers of unsafe driving and destructive thrill-seeking behaviors. PTA Council collaborates with the Howard County Police, the Howard County Public School System, HC DrugFree, and the Howard County Health Department Office of Substance Abuse in this communication effort.
The education component is important, but it isn’t enough. A safe and appealing celebration option is critical on a night when most high school junior and senior students will attend an after prom celebration. High school PTA Project Safe and After Prom events provide a safe alternative to the private after prom parties where peer pressure often encourages underage drinking, drugs, and unhealthy and dangerous teen behaviors.
PTA Council is as an umbrella organization for all local school PTAs in Howard County. PTA Council Project Safe and After Prom assists the efforts of the twelve local high school PTAs by representing them and speaking on their behalf regarding Project Safe issues, and sharing information. Project Safe events are a relatively new but growing tradition in Howard County.
